How does a small contractor plan for retirement?

One of the greatest assets the business owner possesses is the business itself, however I have seen many businsses owners not prepare for retirement and at the last minute when they have health problems, they just close down the business.

A business retirement plan can be created in a vast number of ways to meet the needs and desires of the owner.

The following are some real world situations of contractors that I have personally known:

I came across a roofer who had been in business for 35 years developed diabetes and became dizzy when he would work on the roof. He had various helpers mainly day laborers and young men who helped him, over the years but none of them were qualified for a variety of resasons to take over his roofing business. He ended up selling his van for $6,500and old tools and equipment for $5,000 he did n own a house and he had saved $15,000 in a saving account. He was 61 years old and this plus social security, welfare and soup kitchens and perhaps the charity of ome family members would have to support him for his retirement. (Not a very glamorous picture of his golden years.)

Had I meet him before he gave up his business I could of help him a cash buyer or structured a long term gradual buyout retirement plan.

Besides the van and equipment he had the following assets:

A basement full of contracts with name, address and phone number, and newer receipts with emails

He had a telephone nunber that would ring many time per week with people asking for estimates and giving him jobs

He had deep connections in the community through a church group

He had a small website

Many good reviews on yelp and Angies list

If I had met him now, I would of helped him with the "Advantage Contractors Retirement Program"

We would have created a database showing his entire client list, showing the repeat nature of the business and iff possible showing referral sources and referral strings.

We would analyze the acquisition cost for a new original customer, then analyze how many referrals and strings of referrals, we get from various lead sources. This information would be then use to create a report to show potential buyers.
